WEEK 3
Vicki Davis: A Cool Cat of a Teacher (and human being!)
On the header of Vicki Davis' teaching blog - called Cool Cat Teacher Blog - it says "Teaching students with new tools, enthusiasm, and belief that teaching is a noble calling." I love this theme quote because I absolutely agree that Education is not a glamorous profession, but it is SO worthwhile and just what she says - noble! I think it's noble because there are so a few non-benefits of teaching that turn many people off from the profession. The annual pay and the long hours that don't stop when the kids go home are just some of the things that give teaching a bad rap. But those who decide to teach despite the factors we are warned about as being such a hindrance to a happy working life, I think, experience a sense of commitment and reward that far outweighs the difficult factors. I love Vicki's point of view on teaching! She has lots of experience and clearly has felt the weight of glory of teaching, and has experienced the wonderful benefits of this profession.
Vicki has gained a lot of knowledge in technology and has become a speaker on the subject of technology that helps and enhances student learning! This whole idea of educational technology is a very new one to me. I have to be honest, I am very much on the fence of the whole technology transformation in schools, because I see more of the cons of it than the pros. I have seen it as a "sign of the times" and a disconnector of people. Call me old-fashioned, but I would much rather have my students pull out a piece of paper and pencil and use those to write down their beautiful thoughts. Vicki has quite a few blog posts on her Cool Cat of a Teacher website that talk about innovative new ways of having students learn about writing. Check it out here: http://www.coolcatteacher.com/category/technology/pln-branding/
I realize that the American Education system wants to have out with the old, in it the new. I am trying to allow myself to change my perspective and attitude on this subject, because I realize that I will have to adapt to it, and I want to jump on the train as soon as possible and enjoy the goodness out of it as Vicki talks about. I am eager to continue learning more, and Vicki's website will be a place I go to often to inspire my non-technological mindset!
"I’m also convinced, we need more teachers to live balanced, healthy, exciting lives so they can have the energy to reach children. Teaching is tough but it can also be amazing!" -Vicki Davis
